Devastation of Flooding
Heavy rainfall and severe flooding have devastated large parts of Bangladesh, impacting over 4 million people. Thousands of homes have been destroyed; villages and crops washed away; infrastructure damaged including power stations which had been submerged. Authorities reported nearly two dozen fatalities due to landslides and drownings. Deaths included three children who were hit by lightning while trying to help their parents save their crops in fields.
Struggling to Survive
Bangladesh was only just recovering from pre-monsoon floods earlier this year when it was hit by the latest floods caused by fresh rains and rivers bursting. Already struggling to maintain livelihoods and economic security, poor and vulnerable communities now face a desperate struggle just to get the basic necessities of life. With their properties and possessions washed away, they also face prospect of having few or no resources to rebuild their homes.
