Do Something New this New Year
Many people look to make changes every year, and there is something about a fresh, brand new year that makes a great starting point for all the goals and changes you want to make for the months ahead.
Whilst the majority vow to kick-start their new year with a get-fit regime and join the gym, others aim to find new hobbies and interests and others simply want to give back to the world and those around them. It really is wonderful to see so many amongst us also vow to do something good this year.
Whilst developing a new hobby gives you the opportunity to take a break from daily life, finding a hobby that helps others often gives you a new found sense of self-satisfaction that is hard to beat. So why not combine the two?
For example, you could use your favourite pastimes to create things to sell; you could make cakes, toys, clothes, jewellery – anything you think would bring enjoyment to others. What’s more, if you chose to donate the proceeds to charity, not only will it make you feel good and those that buy your creations, but you will help those in need, too. That’s what we would call a win-win situation!
If your goal this year is to get fitter and healthier, then this can easily be combined with giving something back, too; via fund-raising! Whether it is running a marathon, bungee jumping, skydiving or an extremely long bike ride; you could get people to sponsor you for a good cause.
“Whatever of your wealth you spend, shall (first) be for your parents, then the near of kin, and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer; and whatever good you do, verily, Allah SWT has full knowledge of.”
- The Holy Qur’an (2:215)
Get involved with a charity such as Islamic Help is another great way to make a difference this year. Most charitable organisations need a variety of volunteers to complete different types of tasks. Use your skills, time, talent and experience to make a difference to others. While there are many fun and interesting hobbies to choose from, there’s really no feeling like helping others.
“If you perform deeds of charity openly, it is well; but if you bestow it upon the needy undisclosed, it will be even better for you and will atone for some of your bad deeds; and Allah SWT is aware of all that you do.”
- The Holy Qur’an (2:271)
Here at Islamic Help, we are currently running numerous projects and campaigns in a bid to help make a difference; from disabled children sponsorship and orphan sponsorship to local projects and emergency appeals. It is an opportunity to get involved in something you really believe in – be it supporting orphans and widows or helping to provide an education for someone in need.
