Islamic Help has launched a Yemen Emergency Appeal

Islamic Help has launched an emergency appeal to provide essential humanitarian aid to victims of the civil war in Yemen.

Working with international agencies, the Islamic Help team in Yemen will distribute emergency food and water provisions, shelter and survival kits for the displaced, medical aid and emergency baby kits.

The IH team has carried out a series of needs assessments in hospitals and among displaced communities. Ahlam Al Mutwakel, Islamic Help’s Yemen Country Manager, said it was essential they received aid as quickly as possible as the situation continued to deteriorate.

More than 600 people have been killed and 120,000 displaced since a coalition of Gulf states led by Saudi Arabia started airstrikes on March 25 against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

It followed the capture of the capital Sana’a by the Shia Houthis, forcing President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi to flee.

The escalation of violence has worsened the already dire humanitarian situation in large parts of Yemen, the poorest country in the Arab world, with aid agencies struggling against a background of uncertainty and insecurity to help those in need.

An IH team which visited the Al-Thawra Hospital, the main hospital in Sana’a, said it was under severe pressure to cope with the influx of wounded, and was in desperate need of resources to continue providing medical services as well as running its electricity and ambulances.

At Amran, more than 50 internally displaced families voiced their fears to IH of a shortage of food and water, while in Hodeida and Shabwa the aerial bombardment by the Gulf States coalition had increased the pressure on hospitals and medical centres.

Islamic Help aims to provide essential emergency aid to victims of the Yemen crisis.

A donation of £500 will provide an emergency family shelter and survival pack, vital to help displaced households who have nowhere to turn, while 50 people will receive emergency medical care for just £250.

With the current crisis compounding food scarcity, £100 will provide a family with essentials for a month and £70 ensures 10 families have clean and safe drinking water for a week. The chances of a new-born’s survival in a country which has one of the highest mortality rates in the world can be improved with the help of an emergency baby kit for just £50.

Support the people of Yemen in their time of need.
