Nepal Earthquake Emergency Appeal

Islamic Help has launched an Emergency Appeal for Nepal after a massive earthquake which has left at least 3,600 people dead, more than 6,500 injured and thousands homeless.

The quake, measuring 7.8 magnitude, was the strongest to hit Nepal in 80 years. Tremors were felt in India and Pakistan. Victims were reported in India, Bangladesh, Tibet and on Mount Everest, where avalanches were triggered.

Countless numbers were trapped under rubble and rescuers in the capital Kathmandu desperately dug through the remains of collapsed buildings with their bare hands in search of survivors.

The earthquake struck an area of central Nepal between Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara on Saturday April 25. A state of emergency was declared in the country

A series of aftershocks led to thousands of residents fleeing their homes and sleeping on the streets. Kathmandu’s main hospital was overwhelmed with casualties.

On Mount Everest, more than a dozen people were killed in an avalanche triggered by the earthquake. In India, 35 deaths were reported and there was a reported fatality in Bangladesh. It is the worst earthquake in Nepal since 1934 when 8,500 people died.

Most of the Nepalese fatalities are from the Kathmandu Valley, where more than 600 deaths were reported. The area is densely populated, with a population of 2.3 million. As well as Kathmandu Valley, other affected areas include Gorkha and Lamjung Districts. At least 30 of 75 districts were said to have been affected.

Islamic Help is providing:
• Food packages for a family from £25
• Shelter and essential NFI (non-food items) for 1 family: £50
• Combination of food and shelter/NFI: £75

Islamic Help is working with local partners and communities on the ground to deliver emergency aid and to assess what is needed and how to respond most effectively.

Please help the people in Nepal
