Sixth Anniversary Of The Syria Conflict

Today, March 15, 2017, marks the sixth anniversary of the Syrian conflict - six years of violence and horror that have created the largest humanitarian catastrophe of this century.

Its effects have been felt globally but those who continue to suffer most are the Syrian people. Nearly 5 million are refugees; 6.3 millionhave been displaced internally and more than 13 million in Syria continue to live in daily fear and in desperate need of aid.

No one knows the true death toll but last year the United Nations’ special envoy in Syria put the figure at 400,000.

With infrastructure in ruins and seemingly no end to the violence, Syria’s population continues to struggle with children especially vulnerable.

According to the UN there are:

  • 5.8 million children in need in Syria
  • 2.8 million are trapped in ‘hard-to-reach’ areas
  • 2.3 million are refugees
  • 2016 was the worst year for the child population with at least 652 children killed

Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said: “Syria’s war has lasted longer than World War Two in Europe. This is unconscionable. Syria’s children, whether at home or in refugee communities elsewhere, are its future.

“We must also plan for a tomorrow when refugees might safely be able to return. The resolve of the international community to support the vast joint humanitarian and development effort that is needed must not waiver, now or then.”

Islamic Help is part of that international effort and during the last 2 years the support our donors has allowed us to provide emergency aid to more than 250,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

We have also provided emergency aid, distributed by our partner White Hands, to thousands of besieged families in the Syrian cities of Madaya and Aleppo.

We have also started programmes to help build new homes and rebuild damaged housing in safe havens in Syria.

As part of our Syria Emergency Appeal, we have provided food, water, medicines and medical aid, fuel and clothing.

A school for Syrian refugee children was set up in Istanbul, Turkey, and educational materials distributed to refugee children in camps.

We also set up the Birth Clinic in Jordan which is helping hundreds of pregnant Syrian refugees give birth safely and providing care and support for them and their new-borns.

Islamic Help is committed to supporting the people of Syria and Syrian refugees in their time of need.

Thank you for reaching out to thousands of Syrian families and giving them hope in their darkest hours.

Please continue to show your support.
