Syrian Refugee School in Turkey
“Every child has the right to an education which develops their personality, talents and abilities to the full.” That’s the declaration of Unicef and a right enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
For children forced to flee their homes with their families or others and seek refuge in neighbouring countries, it is a right which is easily neglected. For refugees struggling for basic necessities like food and water, education slips down the list of priorities, and the refugee camps that become their temporary homes often lack the facilities and resources to deliver schooling.
Even for refugees who are accommodated in towns and cities, their children are often denied access to the education facilities that the native population enjoys. A strange environment and a language barrier can compound the issues and means many refugee children are set back in their development during their formative years.
Islamic Help aims to redress some of that with our school for Syrian refugee children in Istanbul, Turkey. A 6-classroom school for 240 pupils aged 6 to 18 years old, it will deliver a recognised curriculum by 18 qualified teachers and ensure they not only acquire knowledge in fundamental subjects like maths and science but in IT, the Turkish language and religious education.
The school is not just about classroom learning. We held a special iftar in Ramadan 2014 to welcome the youngsters and their parents to the complex. With the help of our supporters, we will provide free stationery, books, schoolbags, clothes, shoes and a daily lunch for each child.
From just £30 a month for each child, together we can deliver their right to education.
