The words hero and heroic are used so liberally nowadays that they have lost much of their true meaning. How often have we heard commentators describing a footballer who throws himself in front of a shot to block it as heroic? How often do we see actors portraying fictional characters described as heroes?
True heroes, it could be reasonably argued, are those who are willing to put themselves at risk, to sacrifice part of themselves or their time and effort, for the benefit of others and to help others.
For an orphan who has lost a mother or father, a hero is someone who is prepared to offer a small sacrifice to ensure that child’s life does not suffer because of a want of necessities.
No hero can bring back a loved one who has passed away.
What they can do is ensure that the orphan is not lacking for food, shelter, education, healthcare and the general love and security they need for a stable upbringing.
Somewhere in the world, a child is orphaned every 22 seconds.
Many will have no choice but to make their way in the world on their own and face abuse and exploitation - unless a hero steps forward.
